Communication of complex scientific ideas to lay audiences is our specialty. Dr. Lyons served an on-air broadcast meteorologist in major markets (Chicago, Minneapolis-St. Paul, ABCs Good Morning America). For many years he held the AMS TV and Radio Seals of Approval (until his retirement in 1988) and served as chair of the AMS Broadcast Meteorology Board. He also served as media spokesperson on indoor air pollution issues for Honeywell, Inc. and Sears, Roebuck during the 1990s. Dr. Lyons maintains an active public lecture schedule on weather phenomena, including for the insurance industry (State Farm) and state emergency preparedness agencies. He is the author of The Handy Weather Answer Book, a Paper Back Book of the Month Selection in 1997. For the last 13 years he has authored the highly popular desktop calendar, Weather Whys and Wonders produced by Accord Publishing, Inc. Current activities in public science education include serving as executive producer for a planetarium program on weather, The Hundred Year Hunt for the Red Sprite sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Informal Science Education Division. |
